Knowing how to take care of your rug is the best way to keep it looking at its best for many years. Knowledge of how to and how often to clean your rug will help get the longest wear out of your rug. Some rug materials such as wool have a natural resistance to stains but you still need to clean these rugs regularly to avoid the natural fibres breaking down. The below information has been compiled using the guidelines provided by industry experts. -When you get your rug home, make sure and brush up any dirt from the floor -If it snows, avoid walking on the rug with dirty shoes as the salt will eventually cause damage to the fibre of the rugs -This applies to all dirt and grit carried in on your boots, especially for wool rugs as the rug acts like a huge sponge soaking up tar, oil, mud, soil and much more -Treat the rug against moths; sprays and carpet treatments are available to purchase online. Moths love to hatch in nice fluffy carpets and you won’t notice the damage they have done (including causing your rug to molt) in doing so until it’s too late -If you bought an expensive rug, it is advisable to get it professionally cleaned at least once every three years -Sponge cleaning and treating any damage spots should be done at home regularly -Before cleaning your rug hang it against a wall or over the washing line (outside) and beat the back of the rug with a broom or stick in order to get as much dirt out of the rug as possible before it gets wet. If this is not possible thoroughly vacuum the rug on both sides instead -Dirt removal is vital as dirt acts like sandpaper that wears away the fibre of the rug. It is much harder to remove the dirt after the rug gets wet -It is recommended by The Carpet and Rug Institute suggests that between 4 and 9 pounds of dirt should be removed from a 9ft x 12ft rug www.therughouse.co.uk
