| Why choose Ipe decking in London
Many times when I get the opportunity to offer a quotation for a project it has already been specified that the hardwood decking to be used is Ipe. Ipe is a great choice, but there are many other wood species to use for your high end decking project.
The choice of decking should really be about stability, durability and quality. If we consider stability, well, this is the natural characteristic of the wood not to warp, check, split or excessively expand and contract within our environment. We would want to choose a hardwood species that is going to look like its fit for purpose in years to come.
The durability of a hardwood deck is such that it’s going to last a long time without wearing out. This is where we should consider the density of the wood; do not confuse density with stability, just because its hard doesn’t mean it’s going to be stable.
London Architects and Designers choice for hardwood decking is Ipe
So why do most decking specifications demand Ipe, well its beyond doubt that it is the hardest wood and the most durable. In some countries it has the same fire rating as steel! So if you are using decking for a large commercial project or a small garden project, Ipe is in most cases the best hardwood to use
We know that different woods are categorised by their hardness and put into a scale. This is known as the Janka scale. The Janka hardness test calibrates the hardness of wood. It measures the force required to sink an 11.28 mm steel sphere into wood to half its diameter. This method was chosen so that the result would leave an indention into the test piece of wood; at this point the force required to do this is measured in pounds of force (LBF) and then converted into the Janka scale.
This is the list of durable and stable hardwood decking available from Exterior Decking in London, well actually just outside in Amersham.
Ipe 3684, Kurupay 3680, Cumaru 3540 Massaranduba 3190, Merbau 1925,
Elondo 1725,Teak 1150,
Pine for comparison 420
Whilst exhibiting at the Hard Landscaping Show it was apparent that the most popular choice was for Kurupay Hardwood decking. This was due to it’s over whelming swirling pattern of rich grain and colours from deepest darkest red through to black.
I am happy to answer any garden decking questions you may have about installation, design, construction or even assist you in choosing the right hardwood deck for your project.
cheers
